Joseph Campbell writes to Maude, of course he does . . .

Dear Maudie,

With all due respect I have to disagree with your previous advice on finding the meaning of one’s life. I’ve gone on the record on this topic previously. I’ll let my former words speak for me again:

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”

Maude, no one knows more than you how to be alive. This alone is the meaning of life. I’m sure you were aware of that when you gave your advice. Here you are again enchanting folks with one thing while leading them to another. Leave it up to them to connect the dots. That’s just like you, after all.

I’d like to pick up 2 half gallons of Keep it Simple next Wednesday. I’ll come to your place. I hope you’ll have some ginger pie as well.

Truly,

forever,

Joseph Campbell
