It’s cold outside! Let’s make more soup! Soup nourishes us body and spirit; it nourishes us even more when we feed others.
Here is one of Maude’s all-time favorite recipes from Moosewood Restaurant Low Fat Favorites, with a slight variation. This soup is rich and warming, hearty and filling. We’ve never tasted anything else quite like »

I’m sure if you heard anyone say this, you’d find it absurd. Kale is not valium. It’s not a thing like LSD. You’re not going to feel it coming on. You won’t get a sudden feeling of relief 15 minutes after you ingest it. But just because kale doesn’t produce an immediate “effect” doesn’t mean »

Dear Miss Maudie,
On this day I bring you old, friendly, gigantic, expansive, American words. I know these words have been out of fashion for some time and I have held myself through it, gladly, without complaint, for all things have their time - including words.

Dear Maudie,
With all due respect I have to disagree with your previous advice on finding the meaning of one’s life. I’ve gone on the record on this topic previously. I’ll let my former words speak for me again:
“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re »

What if your life isn’t really out to get you? What if the fates aren’t conspiring against you? What if you are not locked in mortal combat with the cosmos? What world would you be living in? What would there be to fear? Who would be your enemy? What could they really do to you?

If you want to know the meaning of your life you can find it inside yourself. However, you can’t discover what’s inside yourself when you’re depleted. The first step to joyous meaning is some deep body and soul nourishment.
Get some herbs. Start with something very simple like oatstraw, nettles, and licorice root or lavender. You »

Herbal infusions are nourishment, plain and simple. Unlike herbal teas, which use a small amount of finely cut herbs steeped in hot water for a short time, herbal infusions are made from a large amount of loose herbs steeped for a very long time. Two – four hours is a minimum, but we prefer overnight. »

Is There a Maude? That’s a funny question, like, “Is there a Santa Claus?” There might be more than one answer. It just might depend on who’s asking.
Is there really a Maude? Sure, she’s a real person. But, Maude could also be a Place – or a Spirit. Maybe anyone could be Maude. You could »
