What is an Herbal Infusion?
Here, let me clear that up for you.
Herbal infusions are nourishment, plain and simple. Unlike herbal teas, which use a small amount of finely cut herbs steeped in hot water for a short time, herbal infusions are made from a large amount of loose herbs steeped for a very long time. Two – four hours is a minimum, but we prefer overnight. This long steeping extracts the maximum properties of the herbs. It’s the properties of the herbs that we choose in our blends that provide the nourishment.
In general, there are four types of herbs – nourishing, tonifying, stimulating/sedating, and poisonous. The careful use of potentially poisonous plants was the beginning of Western medicines and in smaller doses, homeopathy. People often think of herbs in these terms – either as potentially dangerous or as stimulating or sedating, and therefore think of herbs as medicine. While this is true about some herbs, those from the nourishing and tonifying classes act differently, feeding the body easily absorbable nutrients that it needs.
Maude’s formulates recipes using primarily nourishing and tonifying herbs. By extracting the properties of these herbs the infusions are more like food than tea. Two herbs we feature in Maude’s blends are oatstraw and nettles.
